STUDIO MILOU ARCHITECTURE
Studio Milou Architecture is a French architectural firm with branches in Paris and Singapore that specializes in the design of museums, and cultural spaces. The firm has long worked in the adaptive reuse of historical and heritage buildings, seeking imaginative solutions for their reuse while respecting their historical fabric, meaning and surroundings.

Notable projects of Studio Milou Architecture include museums in France at Bougon (Burial Mounds Museum) and Mulhouse (development and extension of the National Automobile Museum). The firm won an architectural competition in 1996 to develop the 'Cité de la mer' at the French port of Cherbourg, which involved the conversion of the historic Gare maritime to house a Museum of the Sea centred around a dry-docked submarine, 'Le Redoutable'.

Other major awards have included the development of the historic centre of the French city of Niort, including the design of public buildings, a multiplex cinema and extensive public spaces. Most recently, the firm won the Europe-wide architectural competition organized by the City of Paris for the adaptive reuse of the 'Carreau du Temple,' one of the few surviving examples of the city's great tradition of 19th-century steel-and-glass architecture. This historic building will now be developed by Studio Milou Architecture into a cultural and leisure centre tailored to the needs of a 21st-century public.

Studio Milou Architecture is serving as international chief architect to the new National Museum of Georgia in Tbilisi, having advised the Government of Georgia on the organization of an international architectural competition and being responsible for the redesign of the National Museum's main historic buildings. In 2007, Studio Milou Architecture was placed first in the international competition for the National Art Gallery of Singapore.

ABOUT JEAN-FRANCOIS MILOU
Jean-Francois Milou, lead partner of Studio Milou Architecture and chief architect for the National Art Gallery of Singapore, is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he qualified as an architect. He leads a team of architects working at Studio Milou Architecture, as well as directing the work of permanent consultants and associated staff working on Studio Milou Architecture's projects in France and elsewhere.

In addition to his architectural work, Jean-Francois Milou has worked as a consultant for UNESCO and for the French Government on projects in India, Nepal, Indonesia and Georgia.

His work, like the work of the firm he leads, reflects a deeply held belief in simple, legible design using appropriate materials and respecting both the fabric of existing buildings and the architectural and urban setting.

ABOUT THE DESIGN
Studio Milou Architecture's winning design for the National Art Gallery of Singapore elegantly integrates the historic Supreme Court and City Hall buildings at roof level through the use of a linear draped canopy supported by tree-like columns. A strong link is made between the two buildings through a new basement level, bringing visitors down to a concourse area beneath the buildings before they make their way up into the higher levels of the Gallery.

Dramatic new spaces are created through the extension of existing stairways and the introduction of links between the two buildings. A new glass roof structure provides a spectacular exhibition space bathed in filtered natural light that is capable of hosting the largest pieces of modern and contemporary art.

Overall, the design reflects Studio Milou Architecture's expertise in museum design and planning, as well as its extensive experience in the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings.
