The arts in Singapore have developed tremendously over the past decade. The arts scene has gained momentum in the past 15 years with the opening of some of the most significant cultural and art spaces in Singapore, such as the National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum and Asian Civilisations Museum.
Singapore’s arts activities have also been increasing steadily, in response to a growing interest among citizens, residents and visitors. Over the last decade, total arts activities have more then trebled in terms of total performances and exhibition days. Attendances at arts events have also increased at the same rate. In the last five years, the Singapore government has invested some $120 million (US$76 million) per year in arts and culture.† This amount goes towards supporting arts development through grants for arts programmes, the running of museums and museum programmes, and the promotion of arts and heritage to the community.
Now, the National Art Gallery is set to take its place as the latest major icon in Singapore’s arts landscape, in line with the country’s vision to build a Global City for the Arts. The Gallery will complement existing arts institutions and add significantly to the cultural ballast of the arts scene in Singapore.
